UGA ASME is a student section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Our mission is to enable and facilitate a community that equips the next generation of engineers with the experiences, skills, and insights needed to thrive as both engineers and professionals.

The only requirement is joining UGA ASME on the UGA Involvement Network. It's that simple!

We recommend attending events whenever you are available and joining at least one project team to start building hands-on experience. Attending events and getting involved with project teams are where you'll gain real technical skills, learn about potential careers from engineers and recruiters, meet peers, and have fun. No! All majors are welcome to join and participate in our events, project teams, and design competitions. We believe diverse perspectives strengthen our community.

Students develop both hard and soft skills—ranging from advanced CAD and simulations to public speaking and communication. Beyond technical growth, you'll gain unique career insights from industry professionals, build a network of peers and mentors, and develop the professional skills that engineering careers demand.

It's completely up to you! Our organization is structured so students can spend as much or as little time as they would like and still benefit as future engineers and professionals. Whether you attend occasional events or commit fully to a project team, there's a path that works for your schedule. The more involved you are, the more you will benefit!

Generally, no—students do not need to RSVP for events. However, specific project team meetings or special events may have different requirements, so it's worth checking event details.

Yes! UGA ASME offers multiple pathways to develop as a leader:

• First-Year Council (FYC) – If you're a first-year student, this is our leadership development program designed just for you. FYC members work alongside the Executive Board to plan events, support outreach, and run professional development initiatives. Through mentorship from upperclassmen and collaboration with peers, you'll build technical, communication, and organizational skills while learning how the organization operates. FYC serves as the primary pipeline for developing our next generation of leaders, with applications opening at the beginning of fall semester.
• Executive Board – As you gain experience, you can apply to join the Executive Board, our main leadership team. E-Board members set direction and oversee day-to-day operations, including project growth. They plan programming, manage the budget, maintain corporate partnerships, and ensure the member experience aligns with our mission. Serving on the E-Board provides hands-on experience in technical leadership, project management, and stakeholder communication that translates directly to engineering careers. Applications open at the beginning of fall and spring semesters.
• Project Team Leadership – You can also lead within our project teams. We recommend getting involved as a regular member first before seeking a leadership position.

There are no dues or fees to become a member of UGA ASME. However:

• Individual project teams may introduce fees on a case-by-case basis if traveling to a competition.
• National ASME membership is optional and costs $25 annually. Use the code "SECTION" for a discount.

Yes! We have two main opportunities:

• Startup Program – Students who want to start a new project team with UGA ASME can do so with approval from the Executive Board and receive funding for everything from pizza to microcontrollers.
• National Scholarships – The national ASME section offers scholarships to students who are national ASME members.
